BILLY CHILDISH
Unknowable but Certain

The ICA is proud to present a major solo exhibition by artist, musician and writer Billy Childish. The artist (who was born in 1959 in Chatham in Kent, where he still lives) is a cult figure with an international following, but this exhibition is the first occasion on which a public institution has attempted to encompass his extraordinary thirty-three year career.

The exhibition will include a gallery of the artist's recent paintings, including still lifes with flowers, self-portraits of the artist hill-walking, and works depicting the life and death of the modernist writer Robert Walser. Childish's paintings are highly expressionistic, conveying a sense of the visionary significance that he discovers in objects, places and people.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a number of events, including performances, readings and screenings featuring the artist and some of his many collaborators. It is being curated by Matthew Higgs (director, White Columns, New York) and Richard Birkett (curator, ICA), and will be staged concurrently with an exhibition of the artist's paintings at White Columns (5 March - 17 April 2010).

The exhibition Patrick Jouin - La substance du design, designed in collaboration with the designer and his team, highlights the methodology of a work by presenting around twenty projects through material and visual aids emblematic of the Agency's production, which was created ten years ago by Patrick Jouin.

The public will thus be able to go behind the scenes of a design agency which manages objects, scripts, texts, drawings, screenings, samples, prototypes and scale models, inventing dialogues between them, and, in turn, forming the chemistry/alchemy of creation.

Born in 1967, Patrick Jouin is one of the major protagonists of contemporary design on the French and international scene. Since 1999, his Parisian agency has distinguished itself by the diversity of its activities: construction design, architecture, industrial design, handicraft, scenographies, street furniture, etc.

The Agency PATRICK JOUIN ID has thus participated in numerous urban projects launched by the City of Paris, such as the creation of new public toilets and even Vélib' stations, but it has also responded to more 'handcrafted' orders which necessitate a specific savoir-faire.

LEE LOZANO

Lee Lozano (1930–1999) belongs to the generation of artists who were active in New York in the 1960s and early 1970s. She was a seminal figure on the largely male-dominated art scene.

Within merely twelve years, Lozano produced radical, often provocative, independent and multifaceted works, verging on pop art, minimalism and conceptual art, but always in her own way. When Lozano left the New York art scene in the early 1970s with her Drop Out Piece, her style had developed through a rapid succession of phases. Towards the end of the 1960s, she abandoned painting entirely, in favour of conceptual art in the form of text-based investigations, Language Pieces. Unlike many of her male colleagues, Lee Lozano never received the recognition she deserved and is therefore still relatively unknown. Among other aspects, her relevance lies in the way she challenged both female and male stereotypes.

Moderna Museet’s retrospective exhibition aims to highlight Lee Lozano and present her oeuvre for the first time to a Nordic audience. The exhibition is produced by Moderna Museet.

In Landscape, i paesaggi astratti di Ester Negretti sono un pretesto per parlare del suo rapporto col mondo, coi luoghi vicini e lontani, coi luoghi della memoria e delle emozioni, della sua stessa vita. Nei landscapes, gli elementi fisici, astratti, gli esseri viventi e i risultati delle azioni umane diventano un tutt'uno, si fondono in un'osmosi che è al centro dell'interesse dell'artista, allora l'opera è compiuta, e ancora trattiene tra le concrezioni della materia, una parte dell'anima di Ester che vi permane, preservata da una patina che protegge le poetiche ispiratrici e creative. Sedimenti di ricordi e sentimenti, attraverso la materia densa e pastosa, esprimono una forza prorompente che vuole arrivare all'osservatore, con la speranza che egli possa accostarsi all'opera godendola appieno, facendola propria attraverso la sensibilità e la sinestesia dei sensi. Ogni elemento compositivo è un cassetto dei ricordi socchiuso, un pensiero al mondo.

Il nostro percorso inizia con opere che, integrando elementi del reale, resine e collanti costruiscono degli eleganti tracciati, segni sulla superficie del quadro, attraverso i quali individuare una concreta via di pensiero.
I lavori in mostra offrono allo spettatore un chiave di lettura con la quale riflettere sul valore della presenza fisica delle cose. Tutti i quadri si presentano in apparenza con aspetti tradizionali, per lasciare poi di essi solo il
ricordo: alla bidimensionalità classica si sostituisce un accenno di spessore, fisica presenza che si colloca a metà strada tra l’essere semplice strumento di lavoro oppure soggetto stesso della composizione.

In esposizione venti litografie sul tema dell'Apocalisse, disegnate da Giorgio De Chirico su carta da riporto e trasportate su zinco che sono state pubblicate per la prima volta nell'edizione dell'Apocalisse nel 1941 a Milano a cura di Raffaele Carrieri per le Edizioni della Chimera, nella traduzione di Monsignor Antonio Martini e con una introduzione di Massimo Bontempelli. Le opere di Giorgio De Chirico sono state messe a disposizione dalle Edizioni Bora di Bologna.

"Artegìa, la ceramica in Italia e nel mondo" sarà presentata con il numero zero, come supplemento di LinkArte.it, durante la prima edizione di argillà Italia. La rivista, che avrà cadenza trimestrale, a partire da gennaio 2009, è un progetto nato da un gruppo di amici, appassionati e professionisti del settore, con la voglia di condividere, di far conoscere ed apprezzare, il proprio mestiere e la propria passione, per dare all'arte ceramica il giusto peso nella nostra cultura.
